The design for the new urban paving for Freising drew inspiration from the existing historical fabric of the city. A two- to three-metre wide pedestrian band laid with natural stone slabs borders the storefronts, where visitors can stroll freely and enjoy the historic city centre. The shop merchants also benefit from the new restructuring, as the transition between the pedestrian band and the driving lane for delivery, fire trucks, public transport and cyclists is designed to be barrier-free and clearly demarcated. This second part of the urban paving is treated with granite. Restaurants and cafes can place their outdoor furniture along the pedestrian band.
The Marienplatz extends over the driving lane to the historic Asam building. The Baroque Marian column and the square-shaped market fountain act as central actors at the weekly market held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The shadow of the historic city gates is engraved into the surface with a dark granite paving, signaling to drivers that they are entering the historic section of the city.
The opening of the Moosach river
Water is an irrefutable addition to people’s daily lives, as its sound transcends everyday routines and transports the consciousness of listeners. The daylighted Stadtmoosach stream follows visitors during their shopping and their strolls, enabling an intimate connection with the water, to which steps lead down, where one can sit and relax.
