ST raum a. designed the concept for the “Blooming City” in partnership with the producer cooperative “Landgard.” More than 26,000 palettes were used as standardized city building blocks, transforming the flower hall into a piece of the metropolis of the future.
To reinforce the concept the palettes were stacked to various heights, creating diverse urban scenarios. The visitors wandered through typical morphologies of European cities. Sometimes the path snaked through narrow alleyways, and sometimes through wide avenues lined by nine-metre high trees, which terminated at market and city squares. The design included recognizable features of Berlin, such as the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburger Tor, and the U-Bahn, all represented in the floral medium.
Innovation and sustainability were central to the design for the “Blooming City,” and were facilitated through the use of resource-conserving and recyclable materials. The palettes returned into their usual circulation at the end of the Green Week.
