Amber – the gold of the north – takes around 260 million years to transform from a viscous resin into a solid, shimmering substance. This image of the gradual formation of amber is carried over into modern times in the morphology of the stadium.
The process is referenced on two levels: the lower level, the origin of development, is defined by a forest of pines, its canopy forming a roof above the 5,000 visitors’ parking spaces. The upper level, the end result of development, is occupied by the stadium in the form of a giant amber stone that shimmers onto the city and links into it using generous, sweeping bridges, stairs, lifts and slopes. Smaller pieces of amber are formed by a hotel and other commercial facilities.
